Anyone else find the ending to this book just ultra sad? If you're a christfag I guess you might see it as happy, but anyone else would probably see it as an example of the meaninglessness of life.

I stopped reading after Smerdyakov committed suicide. Can someone tell me summarise what happens next? I'm too lazy to finish it.
>>
>>8934419
What the fuck man there's like 40 pages left.
>>
>>8934419
trial happens, ivan tells the court that smerdyakov did it, prosecutor makes his case, defense makes their case, dmitri found guilty, little boy Illyushka dies, ultra sad funeral, everyone exclaims how they are sure they will come back to life and meet again. Dmitri will supposedly escape during transport to siberia, but we never really find out. The end. "Hurrah for Alyosha."

Read the epilogue you idiot. The very last 2-3 pages are probably the best (and by far the most emotional) of the entire book. You better not click "Read" on Goodreads if you skip even one page.
>>
>>8934406
How could you read that final speech and still think there is no point to eating pancakes at funerals? Sounds like you're a teenage edgelord.

Why so hostile friend? Im 27 by the way.

>implying you're not a fatherless Russian schoolboy
>>

I don't know. Even if your not a christfag isn't it still happy that they found meaning?
>>
>>8934406
I remember being barely able to finish that last chapter in the epilogue, choking up after every paragraph, then just bursting into tears after I finished it.

>If you're a christfag I guess you might see it as happy, but anyone else would probably see it as an example of the meaninglessness of life.
Well I mean this only partly true. The solution given in most of Dosto's books is that, christianity, he believed it was the only way for russian society to function, specifically orthodox christianity. Nonetheless, it is sad, but when viewed through Elder Zosima's philosophy (which is important to understand, and not all aspects of it are necessarily only christian) it really isn't all too bad as the characters reconcile, Dmitri finds new meaning, etc..

Busy atm, but
>Elder Zosima's philosophy
Yeah this is true. I will admit that I read this book over several months so some stuff was hard to recall right away.

>tfw you're more like the boy who discovered Troy than any other character
>>

Explain yourself sir. Op here.
>>8934593
I get that whole point, that russian society suffered from the nihilistic revolution. But none of the plot lines were really resolved. But i guess thats not the point. But still. Do you think dmitrireally escaped or he thought it was dishonorable?
>>
>>8934406
Ok, OP here, what can i expect from Demons? I ordered the macguire translation or whatever. Penguins classics.

>"The landlady is setting the table for them now - for this memorial dinner or whatever, the priest will be there; shall we stay for that, Karamazov?"
>"Certainly," said Alyosha.
>"It's all so strange, Karamazov, such grief, and then pancakes all of a sudden - how unnatural it all is in our religion!"
>"They're going to have salmon, too," the boy who discovered Troy remarked suddenly in a loud voice.
>"I ask you seriously, Kartashov, not to interrupt anymore with your foolishness, especially when no one is talking to you or even cares to know of your existence," Kolya snapped irritably in his direction. The boy flushed deeply

Dostoyevsky was planning to have Alyosha be that terrorist that the narrator described at the start of the book apparently. Too bad he died before he completed the whole series.

Is this a meme or was he planning sequels? I have heard this rumor in different places. About sequels i mean. No not reddit.

I heard it from the Entitled Opinions podcast on Dostoyevsky
