Some of the sex-scenes ferl meaningfull and important, some of them feel displaced or pointless. The characters talk very openly about sex, even with the novel being set 50 years ago. I think it's something about the japanese language or culture we don't get, the novel made me think that in japanese 'having a realationship with', 'taking into your arms' and 'having sex with' are kind of synonyms.

In this book the frequent sex scenes are important because it's about a teenager growing up, and because one of the main themes is how life and death are so near to one another.
