My thoughts: I'm enjoying it and love how Hugo links up historical events like Waterloo to major events that would eventually happen later on in the novel. V is pretty entertaining. I've read M&D and Crying before this and I'd put it below M&D and above Crying. It's pretty readable, especially once you just absorb yourself in the madness and resign yourself to the fact that it's probably not really going to go anywhere definitive.

The book is a history of the 14th century. It is probably the first woman author I have read since I quit reading YA back in middle school. She makes a few barbed remarks about women's status, which is forgivable, and it is all much better than I expected. Also she seemed to be having great fun backhandedly shitting all over the pre-reformation Catholic Church.
>>
>>8903581
oh, btw, about reading a book a day
> read during breakfast before work ~ 20mins
> spend twice 15min on the shitter at work each day
> have 1.5 hrs of break
>>> adds up to nonchalant en passant 2:20hrs of reading each workday
it's really great, and I can only recommend it to everybody,
breakfast and work alone add up to some 250 pages I gobble through before even arriving at home. From there it's usually just another 2.5hrs or so to finish most books, i.e.:
> spend half an hour in the bathtub, getting clean and reading
> spend half an hour in bed before falling asleep, reading
> consciously find an hour to read somewhere else after work

et voila, a book a day has been read ( approximately, sometimes I read less, of course, sometimes slightly more ).

I really do recommend this to everyone :)

>The Castle

It's not as great as I was anticipating. Honestly, the dialogue can be superfluous at times, especially when K. is talking to others who shouldn't be able to reason and discourse like a fucking lawyer. There are some funny parts, though. And it is quite comfy. But, this being the last of his works I have yet to read, I resolved that his writing was not as robust as I once previously thought. I get that his writing is supposed to be eerie and dreamlike, but things tend to happen jarringly and lack any further explanation. However, I am able to look past that and enjoy the novel. Amerika is still my favorite Kafka novel, desu.

The suffix "oid" means "like" or "resembling" the preceding word. It suggests that a factoid is like a fact but not completely. Like a humanoid would have the shape and many characteristics of a human but isn't actually human. It is not necessarily a false fact but also not equivalent to a "small fact".

I once went on an rural exploration mission with college friends and George Lucas' niece; we high-tailed it out of the area once we heard dogs barking in the distance. This is a true story.

What would you like me to say?
>Her face was of a distinct look. She was considerably attractive, but not of the average Caucasian standards, though many caucasians had commented on her unique features. Although she only had a normal amount of attractiveness, her non-white neo nazi relatives would put her on a pedestal for having fair skin. Her racial background was indistinguishable, which she found very humorous. In fact, she had counted up to eight people believing she was of Japanese decent, not just Asian, but specifically Japanese decent, completely disregarding her lack of chinky eyes. One time in highschool, a young lad named Tyrone had even asked if she had black ancestors. She had put together a mental chart of what other people had though she was in order; disregarding Tyrone, Blacks had believed she was White, Whites had believed she was Asian, Asains had believed she was Hispanic, and Hispanics had believed she was Romani. With this hidden power she had, she had realized she could easily claim any race she wanted, and use it to her advantage. She found that she could even easily pass as the opposite sex in public with slight makeup and change of clothes. This was could probably be credited to the one eighteenth Austrian Jewish blood she had running though her veins. She also believed that writing herself in third person might make her appear slightly ness narcissistic than she actually is. This of course, like many of her plans in life, had not worked according to plan and fell flat on it's feet, just like her writing.

The parts where the narrator (or 2nd narrator) talks about himself in 3rd person and describes his views help with the pace, but it still feels drawn out. 130 pages in, it's 260 pages long in my edition. >I feel no emotions from Shakespeare or Tolstoy and I'm sad about it.
>Just finished War and Peace earlier today, will probably read a book of essays on either Homer or Dostoevsky in anticipation for some re-reads in the coming month

I liked War and Peace and think it's far better than Anna Karenina. There's just something about Tolstoy's drama that stifles any emotional connection to the work, for me. It feels clinical, and I remember back when I read Anna Karenina that I thought the way Tolstoy was writing, both as regards prose (in Maude's translation) and just the structure of the story, feels almost as if a perfect computer were writing it. It had all the makings of a flawless story, but just because it was written by a computer it lacked humanity. And I felt similar when reading through War and Peace, but less so, so maybe it's just a better work or maybe my attitude towards Tolstoy has changed. I recognize both AK and W&P as masterpieces and sincerely believe them to be, but they don't compare to Dostoevsky or Homer or even works by "lesser" authors like Turgenev with his Fathers and Sons.
I hope to appreciate him more in the future, but I'm worried now that I'll never grow into liking him. Finally, I think he's extremely arrogant in his writing and this always puts me off. In both War and Peace and Anna Karenina, he'll use some wonderfully vivid metaphor, and then simply explain what each part of the metaphor relates to. I hate it. I want more ambiguity and meaning that I can derive for myself without having it shoved at me as if I were an idiot. I know that people have said that Dostoevsky writes "with a bludgeon", and Tolstoy is more elusive, but I feel that the complete opposite is true. The proverb about something being "wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle" applies to Tolstoy perfectly, whereas Dostoevsky is deeper but not as wide, which I like much, much more.

Popular books, as with every medium, are usually just "ok". They'll trade focusing on something interesting for mass appeal. You'll probably enjoy reading them, but you won't find anything meaningful in the process.
Or if you do find something meaningful, you're likely to end up like those fedora tippers whose images get spammed here
Lurk here some more to find some good recs that aren't entry level and you'll get much more out of reading in the long run

It's the first thing I'm reading on the subject, other than a a textbook that I skimmed over, so I don't have much to compare it to.
Seems to be doing a pretty good job so far. It suffers a little bit from the usual problem of these kind of books, that interesting things are sometimes hidden behind exercises, though it's not too bad as, as far as I can tell, nothing essential is being cut short.
You can get if for free on LibGen though so can't go wrong in checking it out.

>Everyone praises Hitchhikers as a masterpiece
Only on Reddit. That's why it's a solid basis to work up to actual masterpieces, like Confederacy of Dunces or Tristram Shandy.

I am in love with my step-sister (sort of)
Meditations - Marcus Aurelius
I am enjoying it quite a bit. It is the first non fiction I have read that is considered philosophy. I was not sure how I would go reading it but I am having a good time. It is more accessible than I expected.

>Moving to Los Angeles in 15 days
>The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi

Don't know why I bought it but honestly trying to find the meaning in it beside it being a book about his teachings regarding fighting with a longsword.

I'm a pretty good guitar player.
Warlock by Oakley Hall. Almost done. Good. The tone is somewhere in between Blood Meridian and Lonesome Dove.
