Can anyone recommend some books for children? I've got a niece who does poorly in school and am trying to remedy that by getting her some interesting books to read together.
Any recommendations are appreciated but keep in mind this is for an 8 year old.

Wouldn't trust the /lit/ opinion aside from mine:
Go to any bookstore and take a look through the kids section. Skim a few of the books in her age group. Some of them, clearly, are detrimental to the mental health of children. Other ones are pretty decent. You also have to watch out for the internet leaking into children's books; there's plenty of published books from weeaboos and minecraft garbage. Enjoy.

Enid Blyton
Harry potter
The Neverending Story, The Phantom Tollbooth, and Stardust come to mind. The Brothers Lionheart was interesting but not particularly well-written/well-translated.

Horrible Histories by Terry Deary
Murderous Maths by Kjartan Poskitt
Both series were entertaining and fun

Artemis Fowl
Ronia the Robber's Daughter.
I loved Michael Ende at that age, but mostly just text books. Doesn't she have any oddly particular interest, like cars, a period in history, animals? Most kids have a really nerdy side to them, you just need to find out what she's actually interested in learning. Kids don't read what they're not passionate about.
Starship troopers
Crime & Punishment
The Bible

I can vouch for The Phantom Tollbooth. I stole that shit from my elementary school library because I liked it so much.
