I want to start reading Tolkien's works these holidays, any editions I should go for? anything to avoid?
Any of the published editions you get nowadays will probably be just fine.
Also read The Hobbit first. This is a must

you should pick up a pack with The Hobbit then read that first

If you do read the hobbit first...realize it's aimed at children moreso than LotR.
I mean it's not like you need to worry about translation. Happy reading.
If you don't like the Hobbit, skip it and read LOTR. LOTR > Hobbit, and it's not like you really have to read Hobbit first. Most people already know the story to the Hobbit, or have seen the movie, and may even have seen the LOTR movie.
I didn't much like The Hobbit. I love LOTR.

It comes after. Just buy The Hobbit and LOTR. IF you like those, buy more. Don't just buy a bunch of books to never read.
remember when reading the Hobbit that it's literally a book for children
I was reading through it again recently, andread it semi-aloud as though I were reading it as a bed time story to the child I'll most likely never have
