I did not read the book, but im guessing that the person was not very happy during WW1. Also, directly explaining that you did not do it out of sadness may work better and also makes for a more personal way of saying goodbye.

Seems pretentious. Your life is not a movie, faget. No one will ever understand you exactly or feel what you feel, nor do they care to in as much as it removes them from themselves and their experiences. Knowing that, you should just go with a typical note addressing goodbyes to those close to you, the reasons why (briefly: again, no one cares), and maybe include a poem they can later read at your funeral.
