Is world building a meme? Like does anyone genuinely enjoy having a story broken up by wikipedia articles of fictional people and places?
ASoIaF doesn't really do that though. The setting is gradually revealed through the experiences of the characters.
World building is nice when it's done in a subtle way that actually relates to the plot. If it's just pointless exposition, it really isn't necessary.

Necessary for what?

Yes, weirdly, it turns out many people enjoy reading about creatively conceived worlds with interesting lore and history.
I like worldbuilding when there's some hook to it, like if it's supposed to imagine cultural clashes or metaphysical novums. 'What-if'-scenarios basically. I get pretty triggered by expository padding for its own sake, especially when it isn't done in service for a good story anyway. GRRM isn't as bad, because he just makes it up as he goes along and doesn't dwell on the details anyway.

>Is world building a meme?
Yes.
Like most everything in fantasy, there was like two people in history who could do it well.
The rest of it is just socially awkward neckbeards who use it to channel their ocd into something that resembles production.

Let me guess, one is Tolkien and the other guy is some other faggot
In both cases you're wrong because Tolkien is just as shit and pathetic as GRRM
