I want to read about anarchism, and I don't know where to start.
I've thought about reading Bakunin. Where should I begin?
Please recommend something that is widely known, so I can easily find a translation in my native language.

Thanks!

Perfect start. He's brief and to the point in taking down the flaw with Marxism. He's like the Thomas Paine of anarchists, only wrote less.

I moved on to Emma Goldman and am finishing up Stirner. Really need to get to Kropotkin next ...And Voltairine de Cleyre

Check out Anarchy, State, and Utopia by Robert Nozick for a good introduction to the topic. Goldman, Chomsky, and Bakunin are also good places to start. I'd also give The Communist Manifesto a read if you haven't done so, as there is healthy debate between socialists about individualist versus collectivist anarchism.

Finding an infoshop in your area is a great idea for discovering new literature, propaganda, and pamphlets in your native language.

My start was with Now and After: The ABC of Communist Anarchism by Alexander Berkman. It's simple and constructs a point-by-point argument with rebuttals to common misconceptions or opposing viewpoints in a way that flows naturally, like a self-questioning dialogue. Highly recommend.

Another book that I think is a gem but isn't really commonly cited is Our Enemy, the State by Albert Jay Nock. My professor for Comparative State Politics used it as his core textbook, and it goes into detail on how the state functions to obstruct social power. He does mention Franz Oppenheimer's work The State (Der Staat) quite frequently, but I would recommend that as a supplementary text, as it is quite long and is more of a sociological look at the rise of the state. Still essential, though. Especially interesting in that is the opening part, which details the state's rise out of a rent system and the development of the concept of private property.
