The other option is be so autistically ironic that the type of people who worry about "pretentiousness" think it's all a big joke and you're super-self-aware, and only a few people actually engage with your work. The problem with this is that irony tends to ruin things completely.

It's simple. Just don't talk about your work until it's done. Then give conservative answers unless someone is genuinely interested.
