at least on an abstract level. There are tons of writers who are mostly assholes in real life. Gaddis' daughter wrote that he was basically mute and spent all of his time in his office reading and writing. She said something to the effect that he was so wrapped up in the virtual languages of books that he had forgotten how to speak ordinary English and basically never spoke to anyone in the house.

Wow I can really see where Gwyon came from, then. Where's the source for that? But anyways, I don't know if their being an asshole necesarily reveals a lack of self-awareness. The Recognitions is an intensely introspective book, in my opinion, about the relationship of the sort of fragmentary self and art in the modern world
