Why is this book considered controversial? Is it because of the racism?

Because the late Fitzgerald transcends contemporary thinking. And the fact that the editor ruined this title, makes it controversial in it's own right.

Fitzgerald didn't publish Gatsby until 1925, by then he had already published some of his best work.
Then an editor comes along and says "this is what you need to add to make this novel work." Fitzgerald is a great author, but Gatsby was cringy and clearly forced by the publishing house into the monstrosity it eventually became.

>“I’m thirty,” I said. “I’m five years too old to lie to myself and call it honor.”
>She didn’t answer. Angry, and HALF IN LOVE WITH HER, and tremendously sorry, I turned away.
Yeah, looking back on it he fucked the painter. At first I thought they were both just riding out their hangover together by looking at paintings but fucking makes more sense.
