I read books with disturbed or oppressed characters because it is the modality of suffering I can identify with the easiest. Reading a book about wartime carnage won't communicate as well to me because I do not know the experience. Not to say I'd get nothing out of it because in many ways human suffering is universal, but everybody has their own subset of experience that they would appreciate more out of empathy
