Are there any books that deal with TV in an esoteric way as a central plot element, kinda like pic related or The Cable Guy?

Vineland
In a sense it's the proto-Infinite Jest.
it has more to do with movie theaters / film but television comes into it near the end.
I have weird correlation in mind between early cronenberg, and burrough although i havent read burroughs yet. Are they similiar?

It runs deeper than just the tubeheads. The theme of mediated reality starting with film/TV and taking on a life of its own permeates the book.

Not sure what you're referring to, but I think in general Pynchon has a profound love for pop culture and mass entertainment. I don't think he's trying to be ironic by making so many of his characters pop culture heads. The use of comic book imagery in GR was beautiful. The TV addicts in Vineland seemed to me mostly a lighthearted joke, a contemporary stand-in for the stoner, while the anti-TV police were over the top authoritarians. Also considering most of the TV addicts were Thanatoids it's not exactly framed as a real social issue. I haven't read it in a while though, and it's totally possible I've missed something.
