How do you identify the rhythm you're meant to read a poem

How do you identify the rhythm you're meant to read a poem with?

I try and read poetry in my head and it sounds like my inner voice has severe brain injuries and what works for one sentence won't work for another.

Maybe start by reading Shakespeare's early work. Most of it has a straightforward iambic "ba-DUM" rhythm.

I've tried that and I can follow their rhythm as they're reading but how do they know how long to pause at a particular comma?

I'll try that. I find myself going back to 5 year old tier rhythms. I can read any prose fine but can't into verse it seems.
