What are some good books on European mythology/culture that are entertaining and aren't written through an anti-European lens? There are a lot I could grab on Amazon but I don't want books written by people who think Paganism is about smoking dope and being skanks, or think that European religions should be looked down on because muh Christianity.

That meme is only relevant when people claim something about their heritage that isn't true, such as when people claim the Egyptians were black. Asking for pre-cultural Marxism books on European culture doesn't warrant usage of a "WE"

I read the Penguin History of the World, it was pretty good, I think it was an edition from the 70's. I believe it was mostly the same author who kept releasing new editions over time though so I don't know how much it would have changed.

Old Norse Religion in Long-Term Perspectives: Origins, Changes, and Interactions - Andrén et al.
Greek Religion by Walter Burkert
Religions of Rome (2 volumes) by Beard, North and Price

That doesn't change that it's a book steeped in european mythology. Also, that's a very interesting fact. I didn't know Tolkien was a devout Catholic.

Did you at least know he was a devout Christian? That part should be obvious from the universe he created.
