Can anyone name/recommend 5-10 good short stories? Short as in Metamorphosis.
I'm writing an essay at class in 2 weeks and I will have to choose among these topics:
1)Mind and feelings
2)Honor and dishonor
3)Victory and defeat
4)Experience and mistakes
5)Friendship and rivalry (Or Friends and enemies)
I'm a lazy fuck, I admit it.

Metamorphosis is a novella anyway so
I'd go with The old man and the sea with the topic Victory and defeat

Akutagawa wrote a book of short stories that covers all of those topics. It's not fantastic, but I enjoyed it, for a light read.
Thomas F's last notes to the public by Kjell Askildsen

Mavis Gallant's "Speck's Idea" and "The Latehomecomer" could make for some good writing on victory and defeat. Speck's Idea is a fairly empathetic take on how a post-WWII Frenchman could end up on the far right, and The Latehomecomer is about a German POW returning to Berlin after the end of the war.

>Honor and dishonor
Lieutenant Gustl (None but the Brave) is perfect for this.
Mishima - Patriotism

Mind and feelings:

(actually about death and entropy but you can easily argue it's about mind and feelings)
And I liked his work long before he recently starting getting popular because of the movie adaptation of Story of Your Life.

Old Man and The Sea for sure. Covers topics 2, 3, & 4
Maybe White Nights for 1 & 5
