magical realists argue that it's ok to be a dreamy, imaginative person in real life, and that the artist and audience are pretty much all just flesh-and-blood people; everyone is an Everyman and everyone deserves equal respect for their inner emotional life whether in life or in art

surrealists, on the other hand, are grown-up versions of those try-hard unauthentically cool kids from high school who think that the only thing of importance is to always be attempting social activism (regardless of how successfully); they as artists belong to the elite, while the audience is comprised of Everymen scum, and thusly surrealists will in their work only deal with social matters. However, not in a straightforward manner, but rather by jam-packing a blank draft with heaps of lolsorandom symbolism which usually satires little that is any more universal than just their contemporary era and setting; only making works of art in order to satisfy their self-fulfilling prophecy that the audience is ignorant scum, and the artist a king of such humility that he actually attempts to educate his followers. Alas, they, being just simple everymen, are too ignorant, and so the poor king just isn't managing to get to them at all.

Magical Realism started in Germany as an artistic movement, moved to Latin America as a literary movement, and returned to Europe as a literary movement. It was meant to confound the sense of reality in a way without removing reality completely. Even the modernists were attempting to portray reality in different ways, Magical Realism is an extension of this.
