I've finally come to the part where I want to read more than I can afford and I can't wait until I'm financilly independent to buy a physical copy of every book I want to read so I'm giving in. Which is the best e-reader and why?
I know nothing about it, the closest thing I've had was a tablet which I only used to read comics and a few novels but became unbearable for me so any suggestion is appreciated, maybe a certain type of e-reader is best for something while another one is best for another thing? Please /lit/ guide me into the digital heaven.

Maybe /g/ is a better place for this but I am feeling helpful today. I have own a Kobo Glo HD, I don't know if it's the best one but it's good enough. It can take SD cards, can read pretty much any format you'll come across, and it has backlight (which is very useful, one of the main reasons I choose to update). Those are some of the things you should look out for. I am sure you can find a website where you can compare different e-readers.

Kindle Paperwhite.
Nothing else.

Kindle doesn't even support ePub. Also, Amazon dicks you over with DRM.

Be sure to ignore Kindle shills, OP. Find out what exact e-reader you want by yourself.

Why is Kindle bad tho?

if you can't wait until you're independent then just go to the library

What's the Kobo equivalent of the Paperwhite? Glo HD? It's sold out where I am.
Considering buying a kindle but I want to be able to use any file type. Are Kobos superiour performance-wise in any way?

mfw both the local library and the city library don't have any major piece of literature

The epub argument is ridiculous with calibre

No real difference. Apart from the fact kobo sucks for reading Japanese and I assume Chinese because of how awkward it is to highlight kanji for some reason but that probably doesn't bother most people
