Ishiguro is British not Japanese
>>8740991
he was born in japan to japanese parents
Comparing Murakami to Ishiguro is like comparing Stephen King to Henry James.
I'll never understand how Murakami managed to obtain footpurchase in the literary world except to say that there probably are a lot of very sad bastards with cats cooking pasta and hoping something odd happens so they can write about it.

For you, what constitutes great literature, then? Because Murakami has won many a literary award, and a great deal more than most authors writing today.

He appeals to youth.
Loneliness and cats and name-drops and aphorisms.
The Japanese youth like that he revolts against traditional eastern writing. Western youth likes that he's eastern but accessible.
There's no secret to it, he's just trendy.

would you consider Nabokov American simply because he had American citizenship?
Ishiguro's novels contain a sense of wistful resignation about the characters that I seldom see in other literature. He will probably be best known as an author of Japanese aesthetics which he managed to successfully adapt into Western plot structure. One of my favorites

He's right though.
