Do you have better taste in poetry than reddit? Well /lit/
https://m.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/5d086u/reddit_what_is_your_favorite_poem/
>>8726306
Yes. I don't read poetry, I win by default. Rimbaud doesn't count.
Poetry is as dead an artform as plays and tapdancing.
>>8726312
Then why are you even on the literature board.
>>>/literallyanyotherboard/
>>8726306
Expect all answers here to be Blake, Rimbaud, Pessoa and Crane.
>>8726306
Nothing extraordinary here, it's what you'd expect reddit's tastes to be; robert frost, dylan thomas, william carlos williams, the usual "saw this poem in an episode of my favorite Netflix drama" tier stuff. nothing particularly wrong with these poets, it's just clear the majority of these people don't actually read poetry, which really shouldn't surprise anyone here or there considering hardly anyone does.
what's the point of this thread? this is a board dedicated to literature, of course you'd expect /lit/ (key word here is expect) to have more refined taste in literature than the "AskReddit" section of a website frequented mostly by average, boring people.
>>8726316
>and Crane
please, Stephen maybe. if you mean Harold Hart, there's maybe a handful of people here who actively read him. before I started spamming him a year ago I had never seen him mentioned on this board, even. typical /lit/ answers would be Eliot, any of the high romantics eg Blake, Shelley, Byron etc, Yeats, Milton, and Rimbaud though hardly anyone here speaks french.

come on now, people here never acknowledge Spenser. you really expected results on reddit? not that this place is any better but Spenser is reserved for people that actually read.
>>8726334
No doubt all 3 read Ozymandias because of Breaking Bad.

Nah they saw the trailer to the episode where it was nice and spoonfed to them by Malcolm in the Middle dad, which was and is half of their infatuation with it.
These people. I know these people. In my country they are nothing.
The lowest trees have tops, the ant her gall,
The fly her spleen, the little sparks their heat;
The slender hairs cast shadows, though but small,
And bees have stings, although they be not great;
Seas have their source, and so have shallow springs;
And love is love, in beggars as in kings.
When rivers smoothest run, deep are the fords;
The dial stirs, yet none perceives it move;
The firmest faith is in the fewest words;
The turtles cannot sing, and yet they love:
True hearts have eyes and ears, no tongues to speak;
They hear and see, and sigh, and then they break.

Eh, not bad. I mean those are all super mega popular poems but decent ones.
My favourite poem is Lycidas.
The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter
Ezra Pound
While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chokan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.
At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.
At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the look out?
At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-yen, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.
You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me. I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
As far as Cho-fu-Sa.

Almost 1 in 10 threads on this board are poetry critique threads, if you haven't noticed.
So much for a dead art-form.

It's so damn long for verse, is it worth it anon? I also heard it's unfinished, but that doesn't bother me as much as how much of a commitment it would be
And also for 1000+ pages,is there a story?
>>8726306
I'm not really sure what the purpose of this retarded thread is, but my favorite poet is O'Hara. I don't necessarily think I have better taste than anyone, because taste is an individual characteristic.
However, I'm definitely poetically more informed than 90% of plebbits, and I wouldn't care to talk poetry with any one of them.
Frank O'Hara is not objectively a better poet than, say, WCW or Frost, but the fact that I've read the works of all three artists quite extensively means that my preference for O'Hara is more informed, and based on not only my personal inclination, but a broader poetic foundation, a more complete system of value judgement. That's why /lit/ would say I have better "taste"
