Can anyone recommend me a chapter-by-chapter overview book of the bible? I've been trying to acquire a greater understanding of it but I'm struggling with the archaic language and superfluous information. Looking for a basic, almost wikipedia-esque summary of each chapter.

Looks like someone fell for the "KJV only" meme.
Certain translations have section/chapter headings, which make reading a lot easier. The NET Bible and NRSV have that, and I'm sure others do, too. In fact, now that I'm checking on BibleGateway, a lot of the contemporary translations have at least chapter headings (and some have more accurate section headings): RSV, ESV, NASB, NAB/NABRE.

The OT summary is off as hell. Yes, Moses and the Exodus are important, but the central elements are the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, exemplified by Saul, David, and Solomon.

Anon is correct that I fell for the KJV meme, not really reading it for a religous purpose. I mostly just want to get some appreciation for the bible's literary and cultural influence- which is why I don't particularly want to read the whole thing cover to cover with all the 'unnecessary' parts.

Can you understand french?

The unnecessary parts can be the most informative, though.
I think it's important not to overlook the fact that you're reading a book with thirty chapters devoted to how God likes his meat cooked.
