Beyond that, be aware of your audience. What would come off as pretentious in casual discussion between friends is quite different than what would be pretentious in an academic paper.

I read a lot and have a good vocabulary, but I'm Australian so people were commenting that I 'sound like a fuckin pom' because I wouldn't shorten words as often as they would. So now I ironically use the most obscure Australian slang I can use on top of my normal speech. Now that I'm in uni they think I'm a bogan Hick, and the bogans still think I'm an uppity dickhead. It's great.

Read more and your vocabulary will improve by osmosis. Also try not to swear, it's not a stupid thing to do but it's what you might call a 'low' habit. I tend to feel about 30 IQ points dumber every time I drop a 'fuck' into a completely civil conversation where it isn't necessary, which is quite often.

I feel like it's a fine line. I want to respect them (people who never attended college) as individuals and not "dumb down" my speech for them, but then this kind of thing will happen and I just don't know.

By not being pretentious and saying what comes to your mind more or less immediately. If you actually have solid and intelligent thoughts and you don't have some sort of speech impediment or inability to convey what's in your mind, then you won't come across as trying too hard.

That's fucking stupid. In my experience all avoiding swearing does is make you appear timid and sheltered. Then again I had a pretty rough upbringing, but I've only ever thought less of a person for that, not more.
