Why does my writing style shine when I use the first person perspective, but lose all spark when I try my hand at the third person?

Any one have any writing exercises I can do/any books I can read on the subject?
>>

>he thinks exercises actually help
Yeah, nah. Just don't bother m8.
>>
I don't know, try writing a classic book in a different tense/perspective or something
>>
>>8700314
That's actually a pretty good God damn idea.

>>8700313
Sure, man. Practice doesn't help. Good attitude.
>>
>>8700320
Exercises aren't practice. Trying to write what you actually want to write even with your limited skillset is.
>>
>>8700307

>any books I can read on the subject?

yes. read 'the elements of style'.
>>
>>8700334
>Exercises aren't writing with a deliberate goal in mind

Classes exist for a reason, and you're a fool if you think tools created by professionals that passed before won't help.

It's not like I won't be writing what I want to write anyway, I'll just be supplementing it with a more useful type of writing that can enrich my next stuff.

So salty.

Those "professionals" that teach creative writing are all failed authors.
>>

Are your first person narrators very similar in life experience and outlook to you? If you have trouble with third person narration maybe you actually have trouble with being objective and not projecting yourself into your stories.
>>
>>8700307
find a co writer who does what you fail at. very few are good at everything, some fail at dialogue, some fail at world building, etc
>>
>>8700497
semi true. They could be published and still teaching also "failed authors" excuse has been used too often by people who have not bothered learning even the basic story structure
>>
>>8700497
As I've taken classes with Joyce Carol Oates, Ben Marcus, Tao Lin (lol okay maybe true on that one), and other's who actively publish with the big 5
>>
>>8700307

There's no point asking for general advice.

Post excerpts of your work.
>>
>>8700307
You're afraid of your own voice.

Write in the first person a narrator who uses the third person to tell the story.

It will give you someplace to hide.

>Ben Marcus
Holy shit I think I took a class from him at Brown.
