How is it that Russia produces so much great literature despite being a shitty place to live

Living in a shifty place is good for writing. Living in a modern first world country you end up like DFW.

I was going to make this exact post.
>>
>>8692734
If this is the case, why isn't there way more great literature from Asia or africa?
>>
>>8692834
Africa is too shitty, there must be a balance in being shitty but having just enough culture to counter, cold climate also helps.
>>
>>8692725
Ask to Cervantes.
>>
>>8692834
>Africa
Too violent and undeveloped
>Asia
Asians have an ongoing tradition of keeping the population illiterate, perhaps after their regime collapses they can have a golden age
>>
>>8692725
What about Byron?
This guy had everything: title, money, looks, charisma, ladies, fame, lots of travelling, the Shelleys, even a pet bear. He even had a damn pet bear.
>>
>>8692834
Asia does have a lot of great literature. It's just that Westerners don't care, don't translate it (except a few major authors), and don't read it.
>>
>>8693100
How did Byron die anon?

That man sought out the trouble his upbringing denied him.

What's up with this le struggling starving artist meme? The reason Ancient Greece produced such great philosophy was because of the prosperity maritime commercialism. They reached a point in their civilization where a group of people could afford to sit around all day and study nature and argue theories. The same is true for Renaissance Italy, Tudor England, the Enlightenment in France, Weinmar classicism before the Napoleonic Wars in Germany etc.

Economic progress---->Cultural achievement. Com'on /lit/ youre supposed to know these things.

Exactly, it's a shitty place to live. That's why. It's also a very depressing place to live, which is an added bonus.
Just shitty enough, depressing enough, and literate enough to make a great story.

People mistake "developing economy" for "shithole".

People forget that Victorian Russia was modern-day China; by far they had the fastest growing economy.

They have nothing better to do than read/write. Its general case with falling relevance of lit in modern times

Because its a prerequisite for writing good lit.

Not true at all. You can capture that passion poetically if you're talented.

>Russia produces so much great literature

Name one noteworthy author from the 2000s.

Hell, name one noteworthy author that's not Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy or Chekov.
>>
>>8695061

Not OP, but there's Turgenev, Pushkin, Gogol,
Solzhenitsyn, Teffi, and probably more, I'm not
particularly well read.
As for any noteworthy authors from the 2000s, I
have no idea.
>>
>>8692671
Used to. But then again, a lot of countries could boast about their literature in the 19th century.
>>
>>8695061
Countries come into and out of fashion. At the moment south american lit is the shit, once a bunch of russian works get translated and gain some momentum we might have a few years of Russians being popular. Russian lit was big in the 20's and 30's, made a comeback in the 80's when a lot of their books were translated and sold in the west.
>>
>>8695061
You need more russian authors from 2000s? I have it, more than you can imagine.
How about Mamleev? And Dragomoshchenko. And Golovin Evgenii Vsevolodovich, one of the greatest person who writes essays ever in russian language. But russian literature is really in shit, however somebody still remained in this country.

>name one noteworthy author that's not Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy or Chekov.

Great Russian Literature its story about many and many autors whose name not Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy or Chekov. You lose. How about Silver Age and Golden Age in russian culture? You know it?

A. Dugin is very dubious quality writer, its local russian meme more than philosopher
>>

*produced. It no longer does and it's still a shitty place to live.
>>
Did fucking ANYONE on this fucking pseud board even read Toynbee?
le "economic prosperity = cultural richness" and le "shitty life = cultural richness" are both retarded fucking memes and both equally wrong.
The genesis of culture is immensely complex and probably can't be modeled at all, certainly not along the overly simplified lines the retards in this thread are reflexively offering.

Bulgakov

>>8692834

Asia has tons already as is growing, northeast Africa and Nigeria are starting to have some degree of cultural strength.

If Nigeria never pulls itself up by its bootstraps though, you can probably be fair and say Africa is doomed to be crap for eternity. Nigeria is the growing jewel of black Africa.

Because they're extremely cultured, no matter what the living conditions are.

I've talked to a lot of russians and they all seem to know plenty of literature, except for the gopniks.
Compared to the average murrican girl, the russian qts are cultured as fuck.

Obviously you haven't heard of victor pelevin. It's like saying there are no great french author while not having read Houllebecq, Carrère, Venner.

Generation P was made into a great movie.

pic related.

Western Russia is not that bad. It's the Asian part that is shit.
