As someone who used to be involved in grad admissions, they love taking people with """diverse""" opinions, and you'll be the only non-liberal I guarentee it.

Separating yourself from the pack is for job applications and bachelors degrees.

Tell them what you've done, what you're doing, and what you hope to do.
They'll either like your proposed project or not. It's not about being good enough for grad school. It's about finding people that can tolerate you and work with you for 5+ years. Be honest. Not all your interests will be those of others.
