You could simply not give a fuck to your colleagues and choose what interests you. On HS, I chose Faust as the theme of a literature presentation, while almost everyone chose YA or simpler books.

Why would you choose YA in the first place?

Choosing a 'harder' book is actually much easier because so much more analysis (that is going to be a lot better for an academic report as well) is out there which you can basically copy.

In 8th grade, everyone chose dumb shit and I chose Catcher in the Rye (also dumb shit but I digress)

tfw in my final year of high school i remember teachers telling us all we should study 'real literature' like looking for alaska for our final essay, and when I did my final essay on melville and conrad the teachers were frustrated because they hadn't read either moby dick or heart of darkness, but they were nevertheless convinced either books had imperialist agendas (because chinua achebe told them so). makes me sad thinking how uninspiring those english teachers were.
