Who is the king/queen of the short story form?
Pic related- I think Carver does clipped-down masculine prose better than Hemingway. His stories are relentlessly mundane in subject matter. Despite this, they're almost mythical in power. Do yourself a favour if you haven't read him- Cathedral is a good place to start.
What do you guys think?

Don't like this one? Most of his collections are superb- Short Cuts, Will You Please be Quiet, Please? Read 'em!

Alice Munro.

Jesus Christ.
Flannery O'Connor, no contest
Carver isn't that great, and Cathedral is a rip-off of D.H. Lawrence's The Blind Man.
As for masters: Lawrence, Chekov, Borges, Kafka, O'Connor, Henry James, Tolstoy, and Hemmingway. I also have a great fondess for Cheever, although he's a good step below the other writers.
Gogol or Kafka, IMO. But I haven't read Borges yet.

Just reading some Lawrence novellas (The LadyBird, The Fox, The Captain's Doll) and they're fucking great. Not everyone can handle that length.

>Masculine prose
Hemingway's prose is decidedly feminine
