Based on the sound alone I would say some of the Romance languages, probably Italian, perhaps Portuguese (the Brazilian kind, in my opinion, is more sonorous, it has more open and broad vowels; the European Portuguese has more a consonant sound, a harsher flavor: it bears a resemblance to Russian).

"Azt" is unnecessary as you've made it clear that the subject is the Hungarian language.
We use "azt" or "ezt" when the subject is not clear by context or we want to further emphasize it.

You point at something and say: "Azt kérem" ~I want that.

Can't tell you any textbook examples unfortunately, as there are too many exceptions and "situational rules" in our language, which is flexible to begin with. We mostly go with what we feel is right. You have to use the language, fail, be corrected then rinse and repeat for what seems like eternity if you're not a native speaker. As for us natives, we don't really learn stuff like this in school (nor at uni) as it would be completely pointless (and as you can see, hard) to try and explain it to natives, who know the rules by heart without ever studying them. I vaguely remember learning this in elementary, but it was just another easy 5 (A) for every student.

I'm sorry I can't explain better. It's kinda scary though, in just 2 years I'll be qualified to teach Hungarian. I'll just have to pass the courses that focus on the teaching part.

Start with children's books. Much simpler language. Build your vocabulary until you can read something more serious. The point is to have a vocabulary that allows you to make out unknown words based on context.

You could also try reading the same book in two languages. One you know, and one you're studying. Read a page in the unknown language, read it again in the known language.

Making your own translation is also great. You're forced to write down unknown words, and after some time you'll know them by heart thanks to repetition.


You can't just jump into a new language and try to make sense of a story written in it, unfortunately.

This is just regarding literature ofc. When learning a language you should immerse yourself in it as much as you can. Spend at least an hour a day reading/translating/studying. When you listen to podcasts, music or whatever, don't use it as a background noise, pay attention to the story. Try to understand the words.

Japanese has a rigidity that makes the poetry shocking and moving every time it breaks through. Perhaps Spanish is more beautiful consistently, but I think really good Japanese writing is very special.

If I am not mistaken is the second language (after Italian) that bears more resemblance to classic Latin. In Brazil there is also a great fusion of terms and idioms, from several origins, like German, Italian, African, Indigenous (guaraní, tupí, charrua), as well as the old borrowings from Arabic. I base it on several things. The number of times I've looked up an English word and found there's no equivalent in Portuguese, just a generalised vaguely similar one. My girlfriend is Brazilian and she's constantly amazed by the number of different words she finds when reading in English. I also have read some books in both English and Portuguese and found the Portuguese translation to read like the kids version. Portuguese, at least for me, has the same problem as french, but even worse: It depends too much on phonetics to be aesthetic, but falls short when it comes to actual dept, is a few thousand words being repeated in different contexts and meanings.

I agree with you. I generally read Shakespeare both in my native Portuguese and in English, and to me even in free-verse translations (without respect for the iambic pentameter line) the exuberance and beauty of Shakespeare’s language is awe-inspiring. Doing the reverse reasoning, when I read poets that are known mostly for the sonority of their work, if the content is pale, confuse or shallow, it doesn’t affect me: sound alone is not my thing in language.

To be fair and honest, that's the only way I can enjoy poetry. I can understand German and Dutch and I speak English, but they're all shit in their original language compared to the Hungarian translations. The last time I enjoyed "foreign" poetry in its own language was in HS when we read Hölderlin.

What completely baffles me is anglophone poetry. I'm used to much more symbolism and the clever use of tropes or what you'd call them. Most big Hungarian poets also stuck to their poem's genre, it's not just "Here, I wrote this, read it you fuck". Sometimes even the genre they chose has a meaning in itself.
Anglophone poetry is either completely shit regardless of these things, or it's so in-your-face and "simple" that I wonder why the writer didn't just go with prose.

The problem with this analogy is that any language is spoken mostly by plebs. German in the hands of plebs is truly frightful, and modern Germans are not only plebs but dysgenic autists.
