Been reading a lot of Zola lately
What are some other good, lesser known French writers whose work is available in English?
Maybe you'd like Stendhal and Baalzac

honore de balzac

TAINE?

Are you implying that Zola isn't well known or am I misreading you?

Plebby as fuck if you don't know Stendhal
Jules Renard. Read his Nature Stories if you're into adhd vignettes and his Journal is very influential.
Maupassant, Daudet, Goncourt, Barbey d'Aurevilly and Bloy.

I read a story of Maupassant and I fucking loved it. It disturbed my girlfriend a lot. I think it was called The Maid or something. Amélie Nothomb is great.
Maurice Blanchot
>>8652400
He definitely is.
Julien Green.
Marcel Proust, duh. Best french writer and best Modern writer too.
>>8651330
Julien Gracq for some postmodern gothic surreal weirdness.
Francis Ponge for lovely prose poems.
Natalie Sarraute for more of the same.
Georges Perec for all sorts of cooky stuff.
Raymond Roussel for surreal julesvernian adventures.
Raymond "Bébé" Radiguet for that chinky disturbing depravity you know you crave and need.
I have Blanchot and Toussaint on my to-read list.
These are all minor 20th century authors so you might not have heard much about them. I wouldn't have had either if it weren't for this fine board and its lovely residents of fine taste. I thought it might be time to give back to the community.

No.
>>8652687
It's weird because in the french world, Balzac is undoubtedly a more celebrated figure. I get where that other anon comes from.
>>8652191
I think Anon just wanted recommendations on lesser known frogs because he has already read the big ones, such as Zola.
OP, give Huysmans a shot.
>>8651330
See how you go with Guy Debord, he's very /fa/ rn
>>8651330
Alphonse Daudet
Guy de Maupassant
Huysmans
Jean Giono

Compared to what? Zola? Or just a general consideration?
Anyway, the French /lit/ starter pack is something like: Proust, Hugo, Stendhal, Flaubert, Chateaubriand, Diderot, Balzac, Camus, Céline, Dumas, etc.
