Is it possible for a book series to get this big in the modern age? Or was that the last time it will ever happen?
>>
fifty shades of grey and twilight were bigger.
>>
>>8649559

This is the modern age you dumb nigger
>>
>>8649563
Yes but nobody reads Twilight anymore and in 10 years' time 50 Shades will be forgotten. Harry Potter is still going strong.
>>
>>8649559
No it is not possible because publishers could put together giant marketing campaigns and launch a product.
>>
The hunger games was pretty big
>>
Does it really talk about stretching their legs five hundred times?
>>
>>8649565
This.
>>
>>8649657
No

>>8649565
Fucking this
>>
It will probably happen again in our lifetime, yes

And publishers will keep trying to force it (see twilight, hunger games) for the sake of movie deals and merchandizing
There's just too much money at stake not to

But the protagonist will probably be Hispanic

>pre-widespread internet
>pre generation Z
>pre 9/11
>>

>But the protagonist will probably be Hispanic

holy shit this

it'll be a edgier Percy Jackson with mesoamerican gods or themes reconciling being a colonial rape baby between spanish and native worlds it'll turn out ok but it'll also be shilled everywhere and make tons of money if it gets hispanics to read

Why does Harry Potter's success seem genuine but things like Twilight, Fifty Shades and Hunger Games seem completely phony. Was it just because we were young when it was coming out?

You could argue ASOIAF too but nobody in the mainstream circle so much as legit gave a shit about it until the TV show happened.
>>

It is a good book series, sweet and innocent. All the other literary phenoms have been garbage that pander to peoples worst instincts.
>>
>>8649960
>sweet and innocent
>everything from mid book 4 onwards

That shit was so needlessly dark and edgy, I have no idea how people still read it.
>>
>>8649808
>9/11 is an era-defining historical event

lmao
>>
>>8649985
As an American I can confirm that people here really believe that.
>>
>>8649565
No, this is the contemporary age. Post-WW2.
>>
Novels will die just like poetry before it, such is the fate of slow, deliberate mediums in a world that rapidly gains speed thanks to technology. 20-30 years from now ALL literature will exist in a digital form only, publishing houses will close down, 50 years from now novels will no longer be produced or read outside internet communities.
>>
>>8649848
Well Harry Potter was the first to get as fucking massive as it did. When Twilight started blowing up HP was really the only thing for people to compare it to, and it's still the gold standard in terms of success.
Those other series also don't have the same kind of universal marketing appeal HP does. Twilight was for teen girls, 50 Shades was for middle aged women who don't know that there's porn online and I'm not even sure who Hunger Games was aimed at because by then I was trying really hard to block out YA "phenomenon" shit.
>>
>>8650204
Nope. Ever heard of LoTR? You dumb faggot.
>>
>>8649832
>Getting hispanics to read
HAHA!
Good meme
>>
>>8650209
>getting triggered this easily
wew anon, take a deep breath.
But Harry Potter and LOTR as modern multimedia franchises literally happened at the same time.
>>
>>8650192
As much as it pains me to say it, you are probably more right than wrong.
Our ntural desire to be as productive as possible would make us leave behind anything archaic, even if it is as beatiful as literature.
I only hope that those niche internet communities you talk about would be big enough
>>
>>8650192
I can't see this happening, look at booktube to see how books adapts to new technology. Reading is womans favorite hobby. They will carry on the tradition.
>>
>>8650192

>>
>>8650209
HP blew LOTR out of the water in terms or financial success. Iirc JK Rowling would've been the only person ever to become a billionaire from a book series if she hadn't donated so much money to charity
>>
>>8650814
The way books were published back then is very very different to how they are now. Lord of the rings was serialised in a magazine and then published as a collection afterwards. This is completely different from massive releases with wall to wall coverage.

OP, yes it can happen again but it will due to Youtube E celebs recommending it rather than the media pushing a narrative as before.
>>
I haven't read or watched game of thrones

is it a meme that will be forgotten in 10 years?
>>
>>8651688
yeah
>>
>>8649691
>Hispanic

when a corporate executive wants to make things diverse, they always go for a black male.
>>
>>8649974
Book 4 is the only Harry Potter book that is decent you philistine.
>>
>ywn see a show about Wheel of Time ever

Feels bad man.
>>
>>8649563
no? harry potter transcended age and social groups, 50 shades and twilight may have been bigger in their intended demographics but harry potter was read by more people than any other book
>>
>>8651999
Aren't they actually getting that in gear soon?
>>
>>8649610
HG could have exceeded harry potter size if there were more than three books. The author was already established, unlike JKR, so there was a bigger base to grow from. I'm glad it didn't though, since Hunger Games is far worse literature than Harry Potter is
>>
>>8652013
I don't think so. Some jew company made a horseshit pilot episode, so they wouldn't lose their copyright, and I doubt they are making it.
>>
>>8649691
I'm not so sure. Remember I am Number Four, the book series that had a movie shooting before it was even published? 39 clues, with a website and card game running alongside it? I think publishers are a bit less confident after big failures like those two, and really there hasn't anything been forced on the scale of Twilight and Hunger Games in like five years
>>
>>8650204
I was in target demographic for Hunger Games when it released, I think. I bought the first book close to when it came out. I think it was actually targeted politically, towards kids with left-leaning parents. It came out right after Obama was elected
>>
>>8649974
please don't use your post harry potter internet meme slang to try and critique rowling you coward.
what he is talking about is the soul of the book.
>>
>>8650192
>20-30 years from now ALL literature will exist in a digital form only
Either bait or retard. Gramophone records haven't even died yet.
>>
>>8649559
What's so different about now compared to the '00s?
