Would you guys happen to know anything about book restoration? I came into possession of my great grandpa's old Bible and I'd like to get it functional again. I figure I'd see if it was doable on my own, or if I'd need some professional help.

And as I said, I'd like to just get it functional again, nothing fancy, but if that's not doable I wouldn't mind saving up the money to have it restored, though that may take a while.
I have no advice for you but your great grandpa's bible looks dope af

Thanks, It's pretty neat. He even left notes in it I'd really like to read but it's hard to when the whole thing is falling apart.
Is the entire outer spine missing? To restore it, I wonder if it would be better to just replace all of the outer portion, it doesn't look like it can be restored. How are the ages, any water damage? Yeah just salvage the pages and have the cover replaced. Nice Bible.
My parents had an old cookbook that belonged to my grandmother and they had it rebound. That's what I would do, being a bookbinder is/was an actual profession, and if you were capable of doing something like that on your own you wouldn't be asking for advice here.

Afraid so, all that's left of it is a thin piece of cloth you see in the first picture, and that's falling apart as well. As for water damage there doesn't seem to be any. The pages are in pretty good shape, though you can see that a few on the top have fallen out. Don't know how I'd go about reattaching those to the rest.

I saw that. There's a guy around me but he's pretty expensive. I'm definitely not complaining seeing as this is a pretty obscure thing I would imagine. I tried finding how to do it myself or even track down a book on book restoration but for whatever reason it seems to be pretty hard to find. I also don't know how much he could do without the spine.

Also, sorry for the messy post. I'm about to go to sleep but figure I'd start the thread before that. Didn't think /lit/ moved so fast.

I'd go with the restoring it by paying someone else to do it option. You'd need to restitch the whole thing probably, which is a bitch to do even on a smaller book with new paper. Even then, it looks like some pages are torn, so you might have to shop around to find someone who won't tell you to just chop that bit off and glue bind it. Make sure they do restoration not just binding, and be clear you want it stitched not glued. If they don't say something about specialising in antiquarian works, you probably want to move on.

Gotcha, I appreciate the help. Guess I'll start looking for reputable people and saving up.
