one of his stories is about a man who's miserable until he creates an idol to worship and then in the last line the narrator is like "that's when i realized man would never be happy to be his own master, he must have someone to serve"

Slaughterhouse 5 does this with the maternity ward couple who has no kids, then he breaks the 4th wall and tell the reader to consider the meaning of that. I yelled at that book a couple of times during the last 50 pages

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga does this a lot, but for that reason I think it'd be pretty good for teaching kids about symbolism.
