It seems that I can only read around 20 pages before losing comprehension.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

It seems that I can only read around 20 pages before losing comprehension. Does this happen to anyone else and if so, what can I do to read for longer periods?

You need to go back to when you were in your mother's womb, or to be safe, to just before, and stop your parents from drinking ten standards every single day.

Try cutting back on watching television, if you're really interested in reading then you might not miss it, and don't read where there's a television on in the room.

the same goes for mindless web-surfing, as fun as a site as stumbleupon, 4chan, or [spoilerreddit[/spoiler] might be, it's only another factor that impacts your attention span (>What's the next webpage? What about the next one? There are too many words here let's see the next webpage. Stumble. Stumble. Stumble!)

When you start reading, set a page or time limit and don't stray from it unless there's an emergency. It's up to you to decide what counts as an emergency and what doesn't.

Turn off your phone or leave it in another room, my phone s really good at taking attention away from my work, so I do everything I can, short of burying it in the yard, to make sure I don't have to look at it when i'm studying/writing/reading.

Try reading in quiet, comfortable places with few points of distraction. If your house is too busy, make a plan to head to the library, alternatively you can go to a coffee shop or even the park, as they're typically low volume.

Mosst importantly, have fun with it. If you're reading something that isn't catching your attention then take a break from it, read something else or move on to another activity until you're ready to go back to it. If the material just isn't enjoyable then consider dropping it for good and move on.

Hope these points help, I tried my best in keeping the post short, lest you lose focus halfway through ;^)

Why are people so against taking breaks?

In Swann's Way, Proust talked about taking regular breaks during reading, even when he was an ardent reader.

The idea that you have to read a 300 page novel/book from cover to cover in a day (and, importantly, without breaks!) is a weird fucking meme. The subsequent idea that you can read a lot and quickly while having perfect recollection of the book and understanding all the intricacies of the book in one pass -- that's also fucking bullshit.

Not all books are the same. Some are easier to read than others; some have different font and typesetting choices.

More importantly, you might not get to the entire Western canon. How awful! But if you're just reading so as to say "my eyes have looked all of the words of the Western canon", then you might as well stop.

tl;dr: Read your books at a pace that feels natural to you. Read and possibly re-read to better appreciate the text.

Maybe you try to focus to much on the words

personaly I have to read at least 20 pages before really getting into the story like when you follow a story and not just read words after words

Thanks anon, I'll try what you have suggested. I won't bury my phone but ill keep it off in an other room. I don't watch TV, I think it's worse then the act of shoving your dick in a light socket. I'll definitely cut down on my internet use
>>
1) Stop watching porn and masturbating
2) Stop mindless internet browsing
3) Try meditating consistently everyday

Try edging.

Read until you are just about to lose comprehension, then stop for a short while to let it subside. Once you have regained composure, read a little more until you're just about to forget a key detail, then relax and revise the story in your head. With practice, you will be able to read all day without mentally busting. Your reading sessions will be more pleasurable and rewarding.than you ever thought possible.

A wise choice. I've been comprehension edging for just over a year now. It hurts my brain after a while, but that's just the micro-tears in my hippocampus. Edging daily and eating a protein rich diet has added over an inch to the circumference of my brain already - much to the delight of my lover when we make conversation.

Look at How to Read a Book... It covers this

Different anon here, thanks for the laugh and advice.

Cutting out "screen-time" works. Another thing that works for me is reading multiple books at the same time and swapping - it's not the process of reading that is tiring me, I find, but being immersed in that particular text for too long. Swapping between fiction and non-fiction works well for me. Don't beat yourself up over not consuming entire books lightning-fast or taking your time with something.
