there was a pretty good hand-to-hand combat scene towards the end of the fourth Hyperion book, where the protagonist had to fight a human-machine hybrid with his bare hands (Raul Endymion vs Radamanth Nemes). Simmons actually seems to know what he's writing about when it comes to fisticuffs.
