Finally reading this after many many years, and it is downright insane, but in the best way possible.
I know Artaud is kind of déclassé these days, but that opening section, using the plague as a way into a discussion about theatre is damn brilliant.

I honestly don't know. Back in the 70s, Artaud was kind of all the rage, but I almost never hear him spoken of these days, and I think his whole "theatre of cruelty" thing is mostly ignored. Here in Germany there is no shortage of books on theatre, but I don't know who the most important voices are.

There isn't any, unless you count "black box" which isn't modern; improv, which isn't art; or musicals, which aren't theatre.
