Who is a /Dick/ens here? I have almost finished the Pickwick Papers. I enjoyed it, but i was expecting something else. Maybe i should not hold high expectations for his first book.

>>8598269
i have this on dvd lol. it's not bad
JK Rowling of the 19th century. Didn't mind child labour. Don't like him
>>8598318
Does JK Rowling not mind child labour? That's funny.
Do I have any hope of liking his other stuff if I thought that Nicholas Nickleby was pointless and boring
i liked a tale of two cities, read david copperfield, or about 90% of it before my eyes turned to dust. gonna try reading bleak house soon, but in the end he's just an okay author. i don't even know if he'd be considered essential in my book.

Pickwick is class mate

Yes.
Just finished Great Expectations and I didn't like it. The characters lacked depth, the writing was witty at times, but mostly seemed forced and too formal, the dialogue was very unnatural, the plot melodramatic and filled with cheap coincidences.
A tale of two cities was better. Don't think I'll be reading anything else by him though.
Oliver Twist was alright, the only work from I've read.
Nancy was my favourite character desu, the book had depth and the characters seemed to come alive. I'd recommend it.
Guess this means I'll need a bit more dick(ens)

It depends on what you like.
Some people love Great Expectations and David Copperfield, but they are just "meh" to me.
On the other hand, I love Dombey and Son, Martin Chuzzlewit, Little Dorrit, Bleah House, and Barnaby Rudge... Maybe for the story? Maybe because I love the characters?
My all-time favorite is Our Mutual Friend, which I never get tired of reading, and A Tale of Two Cities is a close second.
Dickens is probably the comfiest writer ever.
Daniel Quilp is a very funny character.

The thing about Pickwick is that it was originally serialized, so he's just kind of making it up as he goes along instead of having planned out a cohesive work. Bleak House is GOAT.
