>Went from mildly depressed to borderline suicidal.

Why was I never told reading lit was so depressing?
>>
you are entering nihilism. you must go through.
>>
Similar story here, I also read all of those.

At the same time I was also reading non-fiction, and I think there are certain subjects that give you a reality check on the human condition. Read about evolution, psychology, economics... once you see the world from a scientific, non-sentimental perspective you'll stop sulking and become content with being a nihilist.
>>
tbqh famalam, don't worry, it's liberating once you get used to it.
I've read most of Dostoevsky, Camus and jumped right into Kierkegaard.
I do stupid shit all the time now, it's liberating knowing you're going to die.
>>
Now read Tolstoy op. Begin the climb back to believing life can be worth living.
>>
>>8596423
Most of those are only depressing in how garbage they are. You're depressed most likely from a lack of exercise, lack of vitamin D, and malnutrition.

nihilism of what? How can you enter 'nihilism', when it literally means non-belief? Are you trying to say exisistential nihilsm?
>>
>>8596446

Agreed. Read Resurrection, and do it now.

Hmm sounds really good, never heard of Resurrection before. I'll definitely buy this in my next haul.

What other of his books should I pick up - aside from War and Peace or Anna Karenina (i'm thinking of reading W&P over the summer holidays when I have a lot of free time)?

Maybe you should stop reading meme-lit which is existential tier books.

Read some fucking greeks or anythinge else.

We should make a list of writers who help with overcoming the crushing nihilism that pervades /lit/ types.
Tolstoy being the main one, but I think you could include other optimist writers (I can't think of any off the top of my head; writers are a fucking miserable bunch.)
Kind of a climbing-out-the-pit-core, dig?

optimism like pessimism is just bluepill / redpill rubbish. try not taking the pill at all.

the real problem is that people read or consume any form of entertainment in this extremely narcissistic way where they want to find something about it that says something about themselves. this perhaps has something to do with not having a strong sense of self-identity too.
they basically fail to see the writers mindset. it's always important to imagine what motivated the writer as opposed to taking it all as gospel "truth". you enjoy it a lot more too when you don't project yourself onto the pages or let the pages project onto you.

i agree that literature shouldn't be accepted as absolute truth. however literature can contain some truth thou one should keep in mind that it is mostly a person exposing his view from afar

I can easily see how people grab the depressing nihilism that the Stranger offers, but at the same time Merusault ultimately comes to terms with his death and decides to live up the days until he dies.

I mean, I took the book as a "seize the day" sort of mentality.

Charles Dickens is always good for my depression. His stories have happy endings and are all around feel-good. Despite this they are realistic and introspective. I recommend Charles Dickens for being less depressed.

Another good one is John Steinbeck. Fairly depressing, but still a touch of hope and happiness in there.

It's part of the magic of reading those types of books. They let you taste the thoughts and beliefs of others who have gone through things you will never go through.

They write so well that they instill some of their passion and knowledge into you the reader.

What you do with your newfound understanding is up to you. Maybe you can set aside the feeling of hopelessness for a bit and try re-reading the books with a fresh perspective.

Also read some less depressing books. Maybe ones that focus on the beauty of what the world has to offer?
