In the UK it's possible to get a PhD without ever having studied the basic sciences or maths beyond the age of 16. I feel like we specialise way too early over here, and end up knowing lots about a specific subject but completely unable to place it into the context of the wider world because we're left ignorant about so many other subjects. There are lots of problems with the US university system for sure, but in terms of general structure, I really wish we were more like them.
