after i read this i went back and read Babel-17, Empire Star and Nova.. and i asked myself "if he wants to write about guys getting sucked off by other guys, why doesn't he just write that?"
which is what he does these days. perhaps he had to try to hide his main interest back then.
It's a book that is many different things. It has mysteries, allusions to mythology, magical realism, experimental literary techniques, interesting characters, relationships, sex, worldbuilding, politics, events, culture. It's both of its time and timeless.
Just read it, it's a fucking masterpiece.

I found it worth reading and re-reading, although you should be resigned to not having satisfactory answers to all your questions. The prose is in several different tones and sometimes quite flowery, which i dont really like.
