I know the kindle uses a proprietary file format to books that makes this difficult

whats the open standards one that makes it easiest? I want maximized functionality

Kobo. You just drag and drop, never connect it to wifi and it can read epub, mobi and pdf. I have a shitty used one because europoor, but anons say HD Glo is great.
