In the german threads we used to recommend Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt for beginners.
Does someone have a link to dropbox folder of german books, or something like that? I also have been dying to read Eine Kurze Weltgeschichte für Junge Leser, but I cant find it anywhere. Could someone help with this?

Goethe is the basis for the modern german syntax, and except for the vocabulary you should have no trouble understanding it, compared to say Kafka or Mann
