It's a Graham Greene book. It doesn't matter where the characters are. They're going to hate it. Probably an Anglo-Catholic thing or something.

No, it's just him. Compare him to Chesterton or Belloc's poetry and fiction, they are two completely different worlds. Greene was a Catholic, but one who was very iffy with his faith, he was also a lifelong adulter and much of the hate his characters show are his.
