Do you think it would be a good idea to have a /lit/ general?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Do you think it would be a good idea to have a /lit/ general? I know they're often viewed as cancerous on other boards, but sometimes I'd like to just have some lighthearted /lit/ chat and ask some basic questions without having to create a new thread.

Yeah maybe.

I don't see any harm in trying.

good first thread boys, I'll see you again next week

A combined, QTDDTOT, social, and meta thread wouldn't eliminate the shitposters and r9k posting but I like the idea.

I think it would be worth a shot. There are some thoughts I have that aren't thread worthy that I wouldn't mind chatting about.
Akin to the tinychat but maybe a bit less faggy?

/lit/ is slow enough to not need general threads. Just treat the board like a general.

You need to pull back your standards on what's "big" enough to constitute its own thread.

Treating the whole board like a general is part of why it's so shit. It has sped up considerably in the past couple years because people start a thread for every stupid question and thought they have. I recognize part of it is a large volume of shitposting, but I don't think it's much worse than having three IJ threads that are only slightly different going at once.
>>
>>8492232
IJ threads and the like have always confused me, because the book really isnt good enough to sustain more than one thread, much more 5-6 daily for years. Who fucking cares so much about a single book, any book?
>>
>>8492243
If anything, we need an IJ general so all IJ threads outside of it can just be deleted on sight.

I'm listening to music while I read for the first time in a long time. I used to find it incredibly distracting and difficult to focus but now it doesn't seem to be too bad for me.

Seconded

I think it is a good idea.

What I have noticed about the various boards isn't just that the board is a place to discuss a certain topic, but that a culture specific to each board develops over time. While the rules require posts to be on topic for a board, and many anons tend to advocate for this, I think many other anons simply want to hang out and talk shit with other like minded people who share their interests, without necessarily being constrained to talk about literature all the time.

At the very least I think a number of threads can be worked into a general such as this, which I certainly wouldn't mind as I like this board more when it is slower.

Maybe call it the /lit/ Lounge or something like that?

In my experience, how distracting music is depends on a few factors.

The first would be how musically stimulating, active or busy the piece is. For example, a calm piano piece with gentle melodies and graceful transitions would be a lot less distracting than a dubstep(brostep) piece that constantly juxtaposes loud syncopated percussive elements.

The second factor is how used to the piece you are. If it is the first time you are listening to something, it would be more distracting as your subconscious doesn't know what to expect. If it is the hundredth time you are listening to something, you pretty much have the entire song in memory already, and hence, your subconscious knows what is coming and thus anticipates and filters out the music more effectively.

The third would be the vocal and lyrical elements. Human voices are naturally distracting as we instinctively process them and their meaning. Vocals are heavier in meaning that instruments alone, with the exception, to some degree, of non lyrical vocals. Vocals in a language you don't understand can be considered non lyrical, to some degree, but not entirely. The same piece where the vocals are replaced with something like a violin is less distracting.

Sound can none the less be used to aid in focus, but that would be things like white noise, nature sounds, certain kinds of monk chants, and so on. Things that aren't really music, but keeps the subconscious from filling your mind with distractions so you can concentrate on reading.
