Don't lend a book with any expectation you'll ever get it back. Every time I hand a book off, I consider it a gift. Then if against all odds it does come back to me, it's like I'M receiving a gift. Comme ci comme ça.

I usually buy two copies of a book. A dedicated hardcover in either an Everyman edition or Leatherbound and then I tend to buy a second copy from goodwill or through thriftbooks that I can lend to people. If I want someone to read something I don't expect the book back.
