Does anyone here compile the books they have read into one list to keep track of the books they own? I have just started reading after giving up gayming and have found this to be very effective in remembering what books I have at my disposal.

A lot of people here use Goodreads for this, I think. Personally, I don't feel the need for either.also

I write them all down in a notebook. I used to keep track of books I bought too but I lost track.

nope, I thought about it and I think at one point I tried having a list. but I gave up years ago, between buying books, going to the library, reading e-books online, listening to audiobooks, etc. guess it isn't that important to me to keep track or maintain a list. now that my husband's and my book collections are becoming increasingly mingled, I just look at it and go "...nah."
my dad is different though, he keeps a notebook so he knows what he's read. but he only reads from specific genres and he wants to make sure he doesn't check the same stuff out from the library.
I have Goodreads for this, but I've started making an xml file as well. GR is fucking with the site design too often, when it becomes unbearably bad I'll switch to xml completely.

I keep track by looking at my bookshelf

It's a pretty good method as long as you organize your bookshelf well.
