This one book called:wanking on a chessboard.
Eco's Foucault's Pendulum is the best conspiracy/secret society book
For a more trippy thing try Fowles' The Magus

masque of the red death, edgar allan poe
not really a secret society story. its a bunch of rich people go to a villa in the countryside to duck a plague but the plague finds them anyway.
great final line though.
>And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all

The Masque of the Red Death by Poe. It's a short story though. Well worth the read.
