The whole point is his descent into madness as the story goes along, the stark transitions between chapter topics are also pretty important. imo you'd lose a lot reading AP out of order

you're wrong OP. BEE books always use steady repetition while constantly escalating the danger. Like a cold techno track. AP is the most stark example of this as Patrick becomes more and more unhinged and the violence starts coming fast and strong in the final third.
