2. the author is the worst person to ask about his influences because of course he wants to hide them. lot 49 is all over broom of the system, and gravity's rainbow is all over infinite jest. i've heard the interview you're thinking of, the host of the show brings up pynchon, the author whose influence wallace was *most* sensitive about (because he had the *most* influence). he had a picture of pynchon on his wall in college (again, see bio) and yet he denied having read lot 49 before he wrote broom of the system (in his last year of college). so yeah, dont accept the author's word about influences.
