anyone know any good biographies/history books?
If your library is that small just start grabbing them at random.

Seconding Livy, who is a blast.
PS if you like Rome, but not other Roman historians (i.e., historians from Rome, not those writing about it), check out Polybius, who's Greek, covers some cool material (Punic Wars), and is famous on his own rite in being one of the ancient world's best teachers of reading and writing history.
Also try Sallust (Roman), he's not super well known but is short and extremely interesting.

Some say James Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson is the greatest example of the genre.

Has anyone on this board actually read Boswell's bio, or anything by Johnson? I've never heard either actually discussed.
