While that is in part due to general 4chan culture there's also the issue that threads are temporary and usually only last a few days here. If you make a thread about a book that almost nobody browsing has read it is bound to go by largely unnoticed. It's not that /lit/ is full of narrowly read assholes, it's just that the nature of the website favours discussion of topics that more people can chime in on and that will usually limit discussion to more widely read and renowned books since there's a higher percentage of posters who will have read them.
